Case Studies - PAC Switchgear & Control
Belfast Harbour Film Studios
Belfast Harbour Film Studios Northern Ireland
Objective
Client: Belfast Harbour Film Studios
Employer: Michael Nugent Ltd (Nugent)
Divisions Involved: PAC Switchgear & Controls and PAC Solar (PAC Electrical Sub Division)
Project Overview
Belfast Harbour Film Studios is an 8-acre site located within the 340-acre Giants Park. They are the newest purpose-built studios in Belfast.
- The new studios incorporate high performance acoustic fabric, high-level walkways and rigging gantries with power, lighting and internal environment options to suit the full spectrum of film production uses.
- Two new identical purpose-built sound stages, each 32,000 ft², are capable of opening up for a combined use as one large space of 64,000 ft².
- The site includes two additional workshops of 11,000 ft² each and 36,000 ft² of purpose-built production offices.
With the growth of Belfast Harbour Film Studios and their increasing demand for a reliable and efficient electrical power distribution, they required a partner who could deliver a solution encompassing both conventional electrical systems and renewable energy sources.
Client’s Requirements
The client approached us with the need to price and supply all main low voltage (LV) electrical panels and distribution boards (DB’s), including small distribution boards (SDB’s) for all 5 buildings; Smil 1 & Smil 2, Studio 1 & Studio 2 and Workshop 2. A full range of electrical infrastructure was required.
These systems were critical to ensuring uninterrupted power supply and distribution throughout each building’s operations, which include high-demand areas such as sound stages, motion capture facilities, various production units, virtual and augmented reality, sophisticated 3D and 4D scanning and motion capture technology and mapping techniques.

· 46 x 410W Longi Solar Panels
· 1 x 15kW Solis Inverter · 1 x Van Der Valk Roofing Kit · 1 x DC Install · 1 x Energy Meter |
Panels for Specialised Areas: We provided SDB’s and load bank panels specifically designed for high-demand areas within the studios:
SDB’s:
- VP1 & VP2: These are designated for critical sound stages, ensuring smooth and uninterrupted power supply.
- MOCAP: Dedicated for the motion capture facility, which requires precise and stable power to support complex digital filming technologies.
Load Bank Panels:
- DMX1 – DMX4: Load bank panels that are essential for testing and managing power loads, ensuring that the studio’s electrical systems can handle peak demands without failure.
Intake Panels:
Smil 1 Intake Panel, Smil 2 Intake Panel & Studio 1&2 Intake Panel: These 3 intake panels were created, supplied and installed by the PAC Switchgear & Controls division. All 3 panels were installed with a direct feed off each building’s transformer, where Studio 1&2 share one transformer between them. Smil 1 and Smil 2 Intake Panels are 3200A each, whilst Studio 1&2’s Intake Panel is 2500A.
Solar Power Integration: As part of the client’s commitment to sustainability, we integrated solar power solutions, reducing reliance on the grid and promoting green energy usage.
Outcome
The installation of 101 Distribution Boards, 5 main LV panels, 4 load bank panels and 3 small distribution boards along with 146 solar PV panels was successfully completed. Ensuring that Belfast Harbour Film Studios now benefits from a reliable and efficient electrical infrastructure. The systems we installed facilitate seamless distribution of electrical power across all 5 buildings, supporting the studio’s operational needs.
By providing a comprehensive solution that covered both traditional electrical systems and renewable energy integration, we helped Belfast Harbour Film Studios achieve their goals of efficient energy distribution and sustainability.
This project underscores our capability to deliver large-scale electrical infrastructure projects that meet both current and future demands of our clients in the entertainment industry.
