Portable Appliance Testing (PAT Testing) is an electrical safety check carried out routinely on your portable electrical items to ensure they are safe to use. This includes a visual inspection of the equipment as well as electrical testing to ensure the integrity of the appliance.
Why is PAT Testing important?
Health and safety legislation places an obligation on the employer, or the responsible person for commercial premises, to ensure that any portable electrical equipment provided for use is safe and fit for purpose.
Also, the Electricity at Work Regulations place a legal responsibility on employers, employees, and the self-employed to comply with the provisions of the regulations and take reasonably practicable steps to ensure that no danger results from the use of portable electrical equipment.
Carrying out PAT Testing provides evidence that you are complying with your legal Duty of Care, which is especially important in the event of an incident or HSE investigation. It also provides evidence of compliance with the requirements of the ISO 45001 standard, and it is likely to be a requirement of your insurance policy.
Therefore, to ensure your organisation remains compliant, you are required to carry out routine PAT Testing.
How frequently should PAT Testing be carried out?
The frequency of portable appliance testing depends upon the type of equipment and the environment it is used in. Routine testing frequencies can be anywhere from 3 months to 3 years. For example, a power tool used on a construction site should be examined more frequently than a lamp in a hotel bedroom. If you are unsure of testing frequency, speak with one of our competent and qualified Electricians for advice and guidance.
